Czech Beer Glossary
This is a (growing) list of terms typical for Czech beer and pub culture. I will add more expressions further down the road. Please feel free to suggest / add terms!
| Czech Term | English Equivalent | Meaning |

| Sládek | Brewmaster / Head Brewer | The skilled person crafting the beer. Highly respected in Czech brewing. |
| Pivo | Beer | Simple and essential: pivo = beer. |
| Výčepní pivo | Draft (Taproom) Beer | Typically 8°–10°, light and lower ABV (3.5–4.2%). Everyday drinking beer. |
| Ležák | Lager (12°–13°) | Literally means “lager” or “aged beer”. Full-bodied, classic Czech lager style. |
| Speciál | Special (Strong or Seasonal) | Usually 13° or higher, stronger and brewed for occasions or seasons. |
| Světlé | Pale | Light in color, often a golden lager. |
| Tmavé | Dark | Dark lagers or stouts — often malty and smooth. |
| Polotmavé | Amber / Semi-dark | Balanced beers with a copper hue. Great malt/hop blend. |
| Kvasnicové | Yeast beer / Kellerbier | Unfiltered and naturally yeasty; cloudy with rich mouthfeel. |
| Nefiltrované | Unfiltered | Beer that hasn’t had yeast or particles filtered out. More rustic, often fresher. |
| Čepované | On tap | Draft beer, poured from the keg. Not bottled or canned. |
| Točené pivo | Draught beer | Another term for beer from the tap. (Literally: “spun beer”) |
| Lahvové pivo | Bottled beer | Usually pasteurized and filtered — longer shelf life. |
| Řezané pivo | Mixed Beer | A blend of two beers, usually a light and dark lager, mixed in varying proportions for unique flavor and color. Popular as a refreshing drink. |
