How Many Breweries Are in the Czech Republic?
Confusion in Foam Jungle
As to the exact number of breweries, the information to be found at this moment, in July 2025, are pretty confusing. According to Pivni.info map (screenshot picture above, map embedded below), they count in over 550. However, the Czech Brewers’ association and craft beer analysts, put the number at around 435–500+ active breweries .
Taking everything together (industrial, independent, micro‑, mini‑, pub breweries), it’s safe to estimate there are currently around 450–500 operational breweries in Czechia.
Breakdown by Size
- Large industrial breweries: approx. 40–50 — including giants like Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen, Budvar, Krušovice, etc
- Medium/small independents: around 70 or so family and regional breweries (en.wikipedia.org)
- Micro-, mini-, pub-based breweries: approximately 400–450, producing under 10 000 hL per year
Historical Growth
- In the early 1990s, just a handful of breweries remained — the craft movement wasn’t yet a thing.
- From 2008 to 2019, the number of microbreweries exploded — from ~128 to ~480.
- By 2022, there were over 500 .
- Despite some closures post‑pandemic, the total still hovers around 450–500 today.
✅ Summary Table
| Category | Estimated Number |
|---|---|

Why the Count Varies
- Definitions differ: Some sources count only official industrial/minipivovary; others include every brewpub, taproom, and restaurant brewery.
- Rapid growth & turnover: New breweries open (sometimes weekly); others close or change status.
- Data sources differ: Business directories (like Smartscraper) undercount, while industry associations include more.
